12/19 - Three Quilts, Small, Medium and large

Three quilt tops and three backs.  For these quilts I made backings by sewing together large pieces of what I have on hand.  Two of the tops were made by a woman in our quilt guild.  I've shown her work before.  She makes the tops while she's in Moab and leaves them for us to finish when she goes back to Alaska for the summer.  The last quilt is from my stash of plaids,  I rather like the plaid shirting fabric, makes a nice, soft, warm quilt.

2019 Queen sized, a keeper

I found this blue material and wanted to use it.  Didn't have enough for a whole quilt and didn't want to cut it up.  So I found in my stash, pieces of wildly colorful florals and made a quilt of 12" squares.  I just finished it, it's big and warm and I really love it.

This orange-ish fabric from my stash has always been one of my favorites.  Don't know why, but I sacrificed and put two 12" squares of it into the quilt.

October 2019, 5' quilt for emergency vehicles in town.

I found some orphan blocks in a drawer, made a few extra to make it bigger.  They ask for about  5' square.  The back is pieced from some of the extra fabric.  It will be used by emergency vehicles in town.

October 2019, Sonya and Shauna

Sonya came to visit for a few days from the big city,  Vere took a couple pictures for us.  It was a short visit but we had some good times, lunch out, board games, sitting on the deck in the beautiful weather, Sonya went on a couple hikes, one with her dad.

Moms old Wool quilt

This is a picture of a quilt my mom made many years ago.  I thought it was hand pieced but it was not.  It's made from scraps of mostly wool, so it is frayed a lot and worn,  The backing is kinda ugly flannel but warm.  Our quilt guild this  year is having talks on quilt history.  I spoke on quilts made in Gee's Bend, Alabama that have become a famous part of Americana.  Their quilts were pieced by hand of bits and pieces of anything they had including old work shirts, pants, and wool scraps.  I saw some on display in a museum once, I think in New York.  This quilt of my mom's made me think of what those Gee's Bend quilts might have looked like.  My sister has this quilt and sent to me to show off.  Thanks Jackie.

October 2019 three baby quilts and a plaque

This plaque was given to me by a friend.  It hangs in my sewing room.

A woman in our quilt guild lives in Alaska during the summer and comes here for the winter months.  While she's here she uses donated fabric to make quilt tops.  She gives the tops to us to quilt, bind and donate to charity.  These are three baby quilts I finished and will give to the pregnancy center in town,.  Pretty and bright to interest the babies.

October 2019 Pool noodles

I had heard of this way to put the quilt sandwich together but didn't  understand what they were talking about till I saw a video on U-tube.  Pool Noodles!  They are the best.  Roll up the backing on a noodle smoothly.  Same with the batting and then the top.  Then you unwind the fabric backing, then batting, then top a bit at a time and pin through all layers.  It's such an easy way to get the 3 layers smoothly together.  I can't believe the way I struggled with bunched up quilt parts all these years.

August 2019 Full sized "Graduation Plaid"

My friend opened a quilt shop in town.  She asked me if I would make a quilt from her fabric to hang in her shop.  This is to show a line of fabric and then maybe sell kits in this pattern.  It's a very pretty pattern and fairly easy to do,  I worked really hard to match up the points.  The double border added a nice touch.

5' X 5' string quilt from plaids

This is a string quilt made from some of my plaids.  A string quilt is strips of fabric sewn to a foundation of paper or fabric.  If  you use paper, you use light weight paper like from an old phone book and it's just to give you a form for the square or rectangle block.  When the pieces are sewn, you square up the block then tear away the paper.  On this one I used light weight muslin and it was left on the quilt.  It made it heavy so I didn't quilt it with batting.  I used plaid fabric squares for the back.  Kinda like using plaids this way.

August 2019, three large and one small quilts

A couple months ago I found a bag of strips of fabric, about 1 1/2" wide.  I cute the strips into 4 1/2" lengths, Squared them up to 4" to sew together and made these three large quilts, one mostly blue, one mostly pink and one just random pieces.  I didn't plan on it, but had to save the beautiful greenish-turquoise pieces for a small baby sized quilt.  I'm trying to think how to border the baby quilt but the large ones will stay without borders.  Someday soon I'll do a simple straight line quilting.

July, 2019 Two crib sized quilts

These two crib sized quilts I made, one for a newborn at church and one for the pregnancy center in town.  The pattern is called Double Triangle, I really like this pattern and plan to make several more.  It is easy, pretty, but time consuming.  I found the pattern on a website, called "Film in the Fridge".

"The Finisher" 6 baby quilts finished for a friend.

Call me "the Finisher".  These six quilts made by a friend for her grandbabies needed the bindings to finish them off but she hadn't done them.  I love to finish off quilts and offered to do these for her.  She said "yes", and I did it.  Really cute quilts.

2019 baby quilt finished for sister Barbara

My sister and her husband came to visit.  She had taken a class and made the center part of this quilt, the hard part.  But it had been sitting at her house for some years and wanted to know if I wanted to finish it.  I put on the pink border and the blue border and then quilted it and put the binding on in three days.  It is a really cute quilt.  The background material has pink and blue flowers.

2019 baby quilt, for infants at church

I love making quilts and enjoy giving them away.  I made two of these quilts, one a little bigger than the other.  They are made from "cheater" fabric, which means the material was printed to look like it's pieced.  The back is this pretty yellow with a narrow blue stripe, quilted with the edge finished with a strip of binding.

5'x5' quilts for Emergency Vehicles in town.

Someone at quilt guild had a stack of squares cut from Laura Senter's stash.  I added some to make this 5' x 5' quilt to be used by the ambulances or  police cars in town.  They wrap victims in them, and then some are given to them.  This one wildly colorful.

5' x 5' quilt for rescue vehicles

This quilt is five feet by five feet to be used by rescue vehicles in town.  It's made from small pieces of fabric from my scrap basket.

New quilt from HST's

This small quilt will go to a newborn at church.  For the back, at bottom, I sewed material together that was all the same except for the color.  Then I made the top from more HST's.  I really enjoy making HST's, I don't know why.  The man who cleaned and serviced my machine said, it must get quite hot, especially on the bars that move the needle and presser foot up and down.  Quilts like these probably are why.
